How to Use This Note Reading Worksheet
Use this worksheet to help students identify notes on the lines and spaces of the treble and bass clefs. It works well for guided practice, independent review, music centers, homework, substitute plans, or a quick formative assessment.
Learning Objective
Students will identify and name notes located on the lines and spaces of the treble and bass clefs.
Suggested Teaching Sequence
Review the names of the treble- and bass-clef lines and spaces.
Model two or three examples with the class.
Have students complete the remaining notes independently.
Check responses together and ask students to explain how they identified each note.
Reuse the worksheet later as a quick review or progress check.
Differentiation Ideas
For students who need support: Complete only one clef at a time, provide a line-and-space reference chart, or allow students to lightly label the staff before answering.
For students ready for a challenge: Ask them to identify each note without a reference chart, complete the worksheet within a set time, or write each note on a blank staff after naming it.
For instrumentalists: Have students name the written note first, then locate and play it on their instrument.
Quick Assessment Idea
Ask students to complete five selected notes without using a reference chart. A student who correctly identifies at least four of the five notes is ready to continue; a student who identifies three or fewer may benefit from additional guided practice.
